Seven Minutes of It Against Lille

Arsenal 3-0 Lille · Champions League, league phase · Emirates Stadium · 13 October 2026

For an hour this was a Champions League night in the dullest sense. Lille were organised, Arsenal were tidy and slow, and the visiting goal was never really troubled. Then Arteta emptied the bench and the game stopped being a contest.

Three in Seven

Jurriën Timber opened it on 64, finishing a Madueke delivery. Three minutes later Eberechi Eze made it two, and the goal came from Ødegaard winning the ball high up the pitch and Saka squaring it. On 71 Bukayo Saka scored the third himself from Kai Havertz's pass.

Saka, Ødegaard and Havertz had all come on. The three of them arriving together is what turned a 0-0 into a 3-0 inside seven minutes, and there is not much more to say about the first hour than that it needed them.

Arteta on the Technical Level

He was blunt about why the first half was what it was.

"We gave simple things away, bad touches, mistimed things, when we sent balls into the box it was into the wrong areas and we get caught. Once we did that better we started to play in the opposition box and with the quality we have, they made a difference."

And then the other half of it:

"It was a joy to watch, the three goals were unbelievable, the connections, the timings, the quality they delivered to score."

There was also a line for everyone sitting on the bench waiting for minutes:

"The minutes are given because they deserve them."

Where That Leaves Us

Two from two in the league phase, level at the top with Barcelona and Sporting. Bayern away next, which is a different kind of evening entirely.

Man of the Match: Jurriën Timber 🇳🇱

The goal broke the game open, and he was the one defender in this side who looked like he wanted to be further up the pitch all night.
